8. Gum Disease

Gum disease begins with plaque build up which is the furry substance we feel over our teeth when we haven't brushed. This then turns to tartar which is the hard yellow build up we may see over our front lower teeth.

Tartar is comprised of bacteria which are extremely damaging to the gums and bone that our teeth are attached to. Over time gum disease progresses to periodontal disease where gums and bone recedes. This results in:

  • Bleeding gums and bad breath
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Loose teeth

Treatment of gum disease involves removing tartar with ultrasonic scalers and may require further treatment do reduce the amount of bacteria doing damage.
